Compassion (Karuna)
Compassion, or Karunā, is the deep empathy and desire to alleviate the suffering of others. For Lord Buddha, compassion was not just a feeling it was a way of life and a moral obligation.
- Lord Buddha taught that all living beings are interconnected, and therefore, one’s happiness is incomplete without the well-being of others.
- True compassion involves selfless action without expecting anything in return.
- In many sutras, the Buddha emphasized helping the poor, forgiving enemies, and practicing loving-kindness (metta) toward all beings—even those who have wronged us.
- Compassion is essential for spiritual liberation. It purifies the mind and reduces ego and hatred.
Mindfulness (Sati)
Mindfulness, or Sati, is the practice of being fully present and aware of one’s thoughts, actions, and surroundings in the current moment.
- Mindfulness is the foundation of the Eightfold Path, particularly in “Right Mindfulness” (Samma Sati).
- The Buddha taught that suffering often comes from dwelling in the past or fearing the future, while peace can only be found in the present.
- Practicing mindfulness helps individuals understand their own thoughts and emotions, leading to clarity, calmness, and wise decision-making.
- It is the key to breaking the cycle of craving and aversion, which leads to enlightenment.
